Another guide for Snow Leopard on Abit IP35-E with an Ati 4870

Some of you have probably got it working by now, but I've struggled for at least a month before getting it right. As you'll understand from my guide I'm not an expert, but I want to share the information for all frustrated guys around there. Some of the kext I'll choose will be probably unnecessary, but the truth is that I just wanted SL working.

My current setup
ABIT IP35-E with latest bios(v18)
Intel Q6600 OC @ 3.3Ghz
8Gb 4x2Gb DDR2 1066Mhz
Saphire ATI 4870 1Gb
64Gb Samsung SSD
Sata Samsung DVDRW

What you'll need before you start using this method:

- A current working version of Snow or Leopard( optional but handy since you'll have to replace one kext after install)
- Snow_Leopard_10.6.1-10.6.2_SSE2_SSE3_Intel_AMD_by_Hazard.iso burned in a DVD
- A second free hard disk, use disk utility to create a Partition (GUID)
- This kext IOATAFamily.kext (download here)
- Some patience to get the ALC888 sound working by building the dsdt.aml (You're lucky, I've built one on my other article).
- Load IP35-E Bios  Optimized Default parameters.. I've personally disabled the Storage IDE Controller(JMICRON) in the bios, since I don't use any IDE devices.

The Hazard 10.6.2 DVD boots by itself using chameleon, but my issue is that the default IOATAFamily.kext in the installation DVD gives me a Kernel Panic, so after install you'll have to replace it with the kext supplied. Further, I use the previous install to create a dsdt.aml to fix the CMOS reset, and most important, the ALC888 Sound which I could not get it working without a DSDT.

Let.s Start the installation

Step 1.a
Having a Running version of Snow Leopard or Leopard
Run in a terminal:  open  /Volumes/ Snow_Leopard_10.6.1-10.6.2_SSE2_SSE3_Intel_AMD_by_Hazard/System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mkg

Step 1.b
Booting directly from DVD

Step 2
After Booting the DVD or Opening the OSInstall.mkg Choose location to install and hit the customize button.
Choices:
10.6.1 and 10.6.2 updates
Bootloader -> Chameleon RC3 PCEFI 10.5
Graphic(Graphic Enabler, Legacy ATI 4800)
Audio (LegacyHDA -> HDAenabler, LegacyHDA ALC888 4 out 2 in HD)
Network(Marvel-Yukon 88E8056)
System Support(AHCI SATA Fix Extra/Extensions,
                              Legacy SATA Fix,AppleRTC,LegacyAppleRTC,ElliotForceLegacyRTC,
      LegacyAppleIntelPIIXATA Fixed, IOATAFamily Fix,
                              IOATAFamily SATA Fix Extra/Extensions, UUID)

Notes: Like I.ve said before, some of this fixes won.t proabably be needed but  better be safe than sorry. J
Of course, the Graphics option should change according to your Video Card..

Step 3
Installation should be finished successful, if you following step 1a then just go into the new installation volume, and replace the IOATAFamily.kext on the link in /Extra/Extensions directory on your new installation.  If you wen-t through Step 1b, then I would probably need to get a USB drive, try and boot into single user with the DVD and try to replace that Kext. (Didn.t tried the last one)

Step 4
Remove the AppleTyMCEDriver.kext from the /System/Library/Extensions if your system panics. See http://netkas.org/?cat=9 for further information.

Step 5
Get the created/downloaded dsdt.aml created in /Extra

Step 6
Boot the new installation, all should be working now. You can boot with -v -f to see if any errors occur.
