Synergy on ubuntu natty 11.04
Written by Administrator

Synergy is the KVM software that allows you to use a shared mouse and keyboard between screens. Either they're the same operating system or not, this is a great tool to have installed. Unfortunately found that installing it on Ubuntu 11.04 is not as straight forward. You'll need to download the deb package from http://synergy-foss.org/ , then open a terminal window and install it the following way:

#sudo apt-get install libqt4-gui

#sudo apt-get install libqt4-network

#sudo dpkg -i synergy-1.4.2-Linux-i686.deb

:) All done now

Jailbreak Iphone 3G, 3GS, 4 on IOS 4.0 or 4.0.1 only
Written by Sergio Crespo

As from today you've the easiest Jailbreak ever for all Iphone 3, 3GS and 4. This Jailbreak assumes you're running IOS(firmware) 4.0 or 4.0.1. There is no need to connect any cable, build any ipsw or run any software, since it's all done via the Safari Web Browser already included on the iphone. You'll just need a Wifi Connection or 3G access, and as long you're connected to the internet, the Jailbreak becomes very simple.

Jailbreak of the iPhone is now Legal in the US, so Europe will be probably adopting the same measures.  Further information and reference: blog.iphonedev.org and http://www.jailbreakme.com/faq.html

Steps below:

1) Double Click  the Home Button and close Safari if opened.

2) Open Safari Icon and write the address: jailbreakme.com

3) Slide to continue, and you'll see window which shows the download status
4) Enjoy.

If at Step 4 after Sliding to Jailbreak you get only the background, it's probably because the server is too busy. Try again from step 1 but use the address jailbreakme.modmyi.com

Logitech Control Center LCC 3.1.0 Snow Leopard 10.6.2
Written by Sergio Crespo
I would like to share an issue I've been having with a Logitech Wave Keyboard Combo. Since the installation of SL 10.6.2, LCC 3.1.0 supplied by Logitech seems to unable to change from de default Apple Layout to the Logitech Keyboard Layout. In my specific case, I use a Portuguese Logitech Wave Keyboard, and I can't change it to "Logitech Portuguese".
The solution I've found to overcome the problem, was downloading ukelele 2.0b3. I don't even need to install ukelele, since I've found inside the dmg a Folder called Logitech which contains the "Logitech Portuguese" layout.
So, the solution is to copy the chosen language keyboard layout into /Users//Library/Keyboard Layouts.
After that go to preferences and chose the new Logitech Layout, it works flawless and no more issues with LCC 3.1.0 :)

Abit IP35-E, dsdt.aml for Snow Leopard
Written by Sergio Crespo

I was able to successfully  build a dsdt.aml for the abit ip35-E (bios v18) motherboard. I was able to get it to compile with no errors or warnings, fixed the CMOS/Bios reset issue, and changed the AZAL entry to be HDEF, so that you can use the Legacy HDA for ALC888 (4outs 2 in) with HDAEnabler.
You can either try and download the 2 files, one is the dsdt.dsl which is not compile yet and that you can use to edit your own dsdt. Or in the other hand you can use the compiled dsdt.aml and get it under the /Extra folder directly...

Download (dsdt.aml)

Draytek USB Adapter Vigor N61 on Snow Leopard
Written by Sergio Crespo
It may be helpful to know that the Draytek N61 USB adapter in the title, works perfectly on Snow Leopard 10.6.2. Although it won't work out of the box, you'll have to install the RALINK 10.6 Drivers which come in a Package from the ralink website USB(RT2870 /RT2770 /RT307X /RT2070 /RT3572). Install the drivers, reboot and plug the USB Adapter... Done... ! >

Google Sync the Iphone as if it was an Exchange Server
Written by Sergio Crespo

I've currently been using the Google Sync capabilities of Gmail in the Iphone. I wanted to keep my contacts, calendars and Email in a central and safe place, and so far I've found that the Gmail servers do offer that possibility... So, why pay for MobileMe if you can have it for free? The Iphone setup won't take more than a few minutes, and not different of an exchange server setup.  Make sure you create a backup before syncing, and probably importing all contacts and calendars to Gmail will be the first good idea... :)

Ubuntu the speeding bullet
Written by Sergio Crespo

I’ve to tell you guys about my latest try to install ubuntu 9.04. I was so impressed that I thought about writing this article.
For some time now, my wife’s laptop was getting extremely slow running Vista. My first thought  was RAM, since the 2Gb installed were showing up almost at 90% usage. So, I managed to get the Laptop to 4Gb.
Did it changed anything? No… I was still frustrated, my wife uses the laptop to check emails and surf the web, and simple things should be fast.

MacOS update to 10.5.7
Written by Sergio Crespo

I've used the iDeneb.Combo.Upgrade.KIT.1057.dmg to upgrade to 10.5.7 and it went perfectly fine. This Ideneb Combo brings the Ideneb 10.5.7 update package, iDeneb.Tool.rev1, and the "Disabled extensions" directory. For some of you, there will be probably a need to copy the "Disabled Extensions" back to the Kernel extensions directory. My personal setup does not require any further changes besides the 10.5.7 combo pkg. I do advise to read the instructions inside before any installation attempt.

Reminder regarding my setup: Intel Q6600 2.4Ghz oc@ 3.4Ghz, Abit IP35-E, 4Gb OCZ 1066Mhz 150Gb WD Raptor10k, Sata DVDRW, ATI HD3870 PCI-E.

MAC and NTFS
Written by Sergio Crespo

I was wondering about NTFS support in the MAC OS and came across MACFuse. Now, being a MACRookie I've installed MacFuse expecting a miracle when connecting my USB Drive which has NTFS. Since it didn't worked out, I didn't wasted  anymore time and googling it again came across NTFS-3G. Now, that's what I'm taliking about, full NTFS support in the MACOS. Plain simple with no pain... Go to http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/ and download the latest pkg. (It requires a reboot)... 10/05/2009 Realized that NTFS-3G installs MACFuse and needs it to run properly, do not remove it.

Mac and IR Receiver
Written by Sergio Crespo

One thing I missed in my Mac was a remote controller.  So after some googling, the solution I found fits any Mac with an USB port.
This can even be a good solution for those of you using a Mac Pro, since by default specs does not bring a IR receiver.
Get a Manta TR1 Bundle IR receiver from http://twistedmelon.com/shop/ and buy an original Apple remote. I’ve bought my remote on ebay for 5£ and got the IR + Software for 23£. The perfect match…

Mac OS and Macports
Written by Sergio Crespo

Some of you will probably know about what I’ll be writing, but sometimes I feel that noobs like me need the push to find the rabbit hole.
In other terms,  I came across the need of installing Darwine for MacOS, which is basically a container to run x86 Windows binaries under the MacOS.
To install Darwine I had 2 options, either find the dmg/pkg or compile the latest available source. At this time I came across Macports, for the ones familiar with Fedora/CentOS  Linux distributions it’s pretty similar to yum.
The Macports software will keep an repository of opensource software available through the www.macports.org website, and when called from the CLI will compile and install any dependencies, to get the software you want to install.

PXE Boot Floppy Disk Images
Written by Marco Vicente

This weekend I had to do some firmware upgrades on a very old HP Proliant DL140 G2 server we had at work. For those of you who don’t know this machine, it is a Pizza box style (only 1U height) server with an Intel Xeon 2.8Ghz CPU, 6 Gigs of RAM and 2 160Gb SATA drives.
This server has been our antivirus server for some years now and I was required to upgrade the firmware to cope with some incompatibilities.
The big problem is that this server is that it has no floppy drive nor CDROM!
Since HP’s firmware update files are installed from bootable floppy disks, I had a big problem. Fortunately for me, I came across the article from mataporkoz.com that shows how to setup a PXE boot server.
Using the article as a departing point, I setup on a linux server the TFTP service and copied the pxelinux.0 to the /tftpboot directory.

Backup Script for your Web and Mysql
Written by Sergio Crespo

I’ve been hosting a few websites under my CentOS server and it’s always a good policy to backup your data.  Since I do not have a backup software I thought about building a script that would backup all my websites including the Mysql database.  My other concern is not only backing up but also have a point in time I can go back if needed.

I will share this for those of you, interested in a not fancy solution, with a very simple ksh script.  Just copy the script, and adjust it to your reality and get the script to run in  your root crontab. Click in "Read More..." to see the script...

Idened Leopard 10.5.6, Slow Network copy over Samba
Written by Sergio Crespo
After a brand new MacOSx installation of ideneb 1.4 with 10.5.6, I’ve realized that my Network was a bit sluggish while accessing my Samba shares.  When I’m saying sluggish I mean excruciatingly sluggish, it took me 10m to copy 63Mb, which is definitely not normal. So after some googling, found that the net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack value for the TCP stack is setup to 3 by default.
#sysctl -a | grep net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack
Enabling net.inet.tcp.delayed ack allows the host to hold off sending an acknowledgement for a specified period of time, instead of immediately after receiving a TCP segment. This allows the host to wait for more data to arrive, which it can thenpotentially send a combined acknowledgement for.

So, in my situation all I had to do for a live change, was setting the variable back to 0.
#sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0
Or, for a permanent solution:
#echo “net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0” >> /etc/sysctl.conf

Ideneb 1.4 10.5.6 on Abit IP35-E
Written by Sergio Crespo
I've recently tested the new Ideneb 10.5.6 upgrade, and I can tell you it was the fastest installation ever. My hardware is pretty much compatible: Abit IP35-E, Intel Q6600 Quad Core, ATI HD 3870, 4 GB RAM, WD SATA Raptor 150gb, and a Samsung Sata DVD-RW.
The only hardware not working out of the box was the Sound which is an ALC888 and even that was easy to get working.
For the initial setup erase the disk before installing the MacOS, with the Disk Utility.

Customized drivers :
AppleYukon2, AppleSMBIOS 1.0.13, ICH Fix,  PowerOFF_OH ( OpenHaltRestart.kext, Fix by Pystar ) , HD3800 Series ( Device ID: 9501, 9505 ),  idlehalt Fix
Use Vanilla 9.6.0 which is the default kernel
To get the ALC888 working get this file(download here). The file contains two needed kernel extensions ALCinject.kext and AppleHDA.kext.
Just get those 2 extensions into /System/Library/Extensions/.
Change the owner and permissions to root:wheel and 755 and remove the /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
If you go to the System Preferences the Sound will be working fine, just choose the correct output… :)

UK O2 Iphone 3G "Could not activate cellular data network. You are not subscribed to a cellular data service."
Written by Sergio Crespo
If your Iphone 3G stops accessing the web and you get the message "Could not activate cellular data network. You are not subscribed to a cellular data service.", in a PAYNGO O2 3G Iphone even if you've the monthly payment in order, then you are facing the same problem I did. I went and did some experiences with another SIM and somehow the network settings for the APN changed from payandgo.o2.co.uk to mobile.o2.co.uk. Just revert the unwanted change under "Settings -> General - Network - Cellular Data Network", change the APN back to payandgo.o2.co.uk (username: vertigo , password: password) and you'll be surfing again. :)

Build PXE server and KickStart
Written by Sergio Crespo

Let’s try and get this server running. First thing to do is get the rpms. You can either use yum or try and find the rpms yourself.
First things first, PXE is the short for Preboot Execution Environment. This will allow you to boot using the OS installation from the Network.
This is definitely something to have in a large enterprise, when several OS deployments occur with similar configurations. For home users it's more like a way to learn a bit more about PXE.

What you’ll need:
-    Xinetd to  tftp-server enabled
-    ftp server, I use vsftpd
-    dhcp configured to allow bootp.
-    A CentOS or RedHat DVD iso, depending in what you want to Kickstart or boot from the Network.

Are you Secured with Secure Shell?
Written by Sergio Crespo
Keep your sshd secure. I was used to setup sshd with default parameters, but that’s a mistake.Default installation of sshd lets you login as root and allows password authentication, and that’s not much safer than having telnet available.
Nothing is 100% secure, but a few changes will keep your system a bit less unsecure.
Make sure you disable root login, password authentication, and that your connection is made using a RSA or DSA key.

Apache Mod_Security your Web Server Protection
Written by Sergio Crespo

For those hosting their own domains and managing their Web Servers, security is always a concern. Most Firewalls will only close/open TCP/IP and UDP ports, so there won't be any web traffic check made at that level, since http port 80 has only 2 status, either open or closed. So the next step will be getting some level of protection that analyses your incoming http traffic and checks if that request is valid or malicious. That's were ModSecurity comes in, mod_security is an open source intrusion detection and prevention engine for web applications. It operates embedded into the web server, acting as a powerful umbrella - shielding applications from attacks. ModSecurity supports both branches of the Apache web server. You can’t be protected against every attack, but at least will give a higher level of confidence regarding certain types of attacks.
You can get it from http://www.modsecurity.org. ModSecurity by itself does not know what's malicious or not, so make sure you install the core-rules after installing the mod_security since those rule's configuration files will have the definitions of the most common attacks.
